Baffin Impact Men’s Boot Review Canada

Quick verdict: Impact is a tall, removable-liner boot to compare for cold-weather activities where coverage matters more than light walking. Its large shell and published pair weight are substantial compromises for stairs, driving and everyday errands. The manufacturer’s severe-cold positioning is not a personal temperature or exposure guarantee.
Exact model, dimensions and fit
Exact model: Baffin Impact 40000048. For a men’s size 9 reference sample, Baffin publishes a 15-inch height, 5.25-inch forefoot width, 13.25-inch external length and 7.42-pound pair weight. Dimensions vary by size. Baffin says this model runs small and recommends choosing one full size larger than your usual footwear size; individual foot shape still matters.
What Baffin’s Polar rating means
Baffin places Impact in its Polar category and publishes an extreme cold-comfort claim. That is a manufacturer rating, not a guarantee that every wearer will be comfortable at one temperature. Wind, activity, sock moisture, circulation, fit, exposure time and whether the liner is fully dry can change comfort dramatically.
The liner is the thermal system
The removable layered liner is the central reason to choose Impact. Multiple materials are used to trap air, manage moisture and reflect heat. Removing the liner after use allows the boot to dry more completely than a permanently insulated design. It also means the liner is a replaceable ownership component whose availability and cost should be checked.
Waterproof moulded lower
The moulded base protects against slush, standing snow and shallow water below the transition to the textile upper. The practical waterproof limit is not the top of the boot. Deep water, an open cuff or damaged seams can still let moisture reach the liner. Snow pants should shed precipitation over the cuff rather than funnel it inside.
Bulk, weight and walking
Impact’s insulation volume creates a large external boot. That helps preserve warm air but makes driving, stairs and long-distance walking less natural. It is best viewed as stationary-cold and heavy-winter equipment, not one boot for commuting, shopping and hiking.
Fit and sock strategy
Use Baffin’s model-specific sizing advice, then check toe room and heel hold with your intended winter socks. The removable liner must be seated correctly and not compressed. More sock thickness is not automatically an improvement if it makes the fit too tight.
Traction limits
The outsole is designed for snow and winter terrain, but no rubber tread should be assumed to provide secure grip on every form of ice. Smooth hard ice may require removable traction devices. Test stairs and vehicle entry carefully because the tall, stiff boot changes ankle movement.
Moisture management
Feet can sweat even in extreme cold, and trapped moisture reduces insulation. Remove the liner after demanding use, air-dry it away from direct high heat and start the next outing with dry socks. A boot that stays dry inside can outperform a warmer-rated boot with a damp liner.
Choose Impact when / skip it when
Choose it for prolonged severe cold, low activity and situations where thermal reserve matters more than agility. Skip it for everyday urban use, frequent driving, long fast walks or anyone who wants one light boot for the whole winter.
Care
Remove and dry the liner, brush salt and grit from the lower, inspect the cuff and seams and store the boot with the liner fully dry. Avoid direct heater contact that can deform the shell or damage liner materials.
Fit and purchase checks
Baffin recommends one full size above your usual footwear size for Impact. Use an indoor fit check to confirm toe space and heel control with the removable liner seated properly. Its large shell needs enough clearance on stairs and around vehicle pedals; sizing advice is not a guarantee of comfort for every foot.
Independent evidence
OutdoorGearLab’s February 2025 exact-model review scored warmth 10/10, weather protection 7/10, comfort and fit 4/10, and traction 7/10. Its testers also found major bulk and water intrusion above the rubber shell. That evidence supports Impact as an extreme-cold specialist, not as a nimble walking boot or protection for water above the moulded lower.
Evidence and limits
Manufacturer construction data and an exact-model independent test support this narrower conclusion. This is test-based confidence, not an owner-satisfaction grade.
Bottom line
Impact is a specialized purchase rather than an all-purpose winter boot. Consider its liner system and coverage alongside the bulk you must walk, climb or drive in. Choose on that fit with the activity—not the coldest temperature printed in the marketing.
